Volume 13: Monster Cells

We're about 3/4 through the Super Fight arc now. Here we learn more about the Monster Association and Saitama gets to face off against the brilliant but lazy martial artist, Suiryu. Today, we're mostly gonna be talking about the monsters though.

Chapter 68

After Tatsumaki chews out Flashy Flash for being useless against the Hundred-Eyes Octopus, Flash gets a good yell in once she leaves. It's a small change in this one, but I think changing Flash's eyes to be less wide and wild is a good idea.

Flashy Flash's eyes not being as wide sells that he's just being grumpy and passive aggressive, which is much more in-character for a quiet and headstrong guy like him.

Next up, we're heading into the depths of the Monster Association. Gyoro Gyoro and Orochi speaking to Metal Knight is slightly different here.

Ah yes. We get a lovely shot of Gyoro Gyoro's back fat.

After that, the volume has an extra double-page spread of Orochi declaring they have easy access to making more monsters. It's a pretty creepy angle, almost like you yourself are skewered on one of his horns.

Volume 12: The Strong

Back at it again with some more Super Fight and Monster Association raid chapters! Yup, this middle part of the Human Monster Saga can drag on a little bit. At least it's got some fun moments.

Chapter 63

First off, the flow of the fight between Genos and Face Ripper is changed for some reason. It was over pretty fast in the original release, but the volume extended it a bit longer. There's not much different in terms of Genos' strategy or anything, it's just cut slightly differently.

Chapter 65

Fubuki's battle with Do-S is also changed; specifically, the part after Do-S talks about brainwashing Tatsumaki and Fubuki gets angry and counterattacks. Again, pretty much the same stuff happens in the fight, but it's been redrawn and/or framed differently.

And that's pretty much it for Volume 12 - just making some extra fights a bit spicier. Hey, I can respect that.

Volume 11: Giant Bug Monster

Unfortunately, there will be no "giant bug monster" discussed in this post. Murata got Elder Centipede right the first time.

This volume marks the beginning of the Super Fight arc. It seems like there's some conflicting opinions on whether or not Super Fight is filler, and if it is, whether or not it's even good filler. Personally, I quite enjoy it and I think it brings some interesting world-building to the One-Punch Man table.

Chapter 57

While the citizens flee from the danger, Garou strides towards it. The change is pretty minor, but I do like how the panic in the streets is a little more crowded and Garou is caught up in it.

For this next one, Murata just tweaked the first panel to make Garou's distance from Metal Bat match the bottom panel. You'll notice the original's space between the two is a bit inconsistent.

Chapter 58

Interestingly, this next scene from Garou vs. Metal Bat was completely removed in the volume release. I guess Murata wanted Garou to not struggle against Metal Bat as much, to show off his strength? Or maybe he thought this trick was too smart of an idea for Metal Bat. Either way, y'all can stop blaming season two for shortening the fight when Murata actually shortened it first. Just saying.

I will admit, the flow of these pages is a little weird. Plus, Garou goes from putting down the manhole cover to charging at Metal Bat like a demon with no warning. Interestingly, it looks like that scary Garou face was repurposed for Garou vs. Superalloy Darkshine later... but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Chapter 59

Here, part of the Monster Association's multi-city raid has been changed, specifically the page showing off Eyesight and Pureblood. They were each given a full page of their own, plus their designs have been slightly altered; Eyesight's outfit is a bit more modest, while Pureblood looks like less of a junkie and is striking a cool pose. The Hero Association worker is also given an extreme close-up.

Chapter 61

You'll notice that Studless (the guy with tires on him) is turned into Saturn Man (the guy with rings around him) in this chapter. This is likely because Studless got hospitalized by Garou earlier in the story, and Murata must've forgotten at first and put him out on the battlefield by mistake. Retcons, babey! It's a change that persists throughout the entire chapter, so I'll just show it once as usual.

Also, Darkness Blade gets hearts in his eyes here since he's being controlled by Do-S.

Oh that's right, this chapter also introduces the PG-13 queen Do-S, who Murata apparently feels the need to redraw a lot for some reason. She honestly doesn't even change that much between versions, but something must've been off to him.

And finally, during this confrontation between Saitama Charanko and Zakos, the latter gets a nice little angle change for some reason.

Volume 10: Fightin' Spirit

Garou's hunt starts to ramp up as he defeats more and more heroes, while Metal Bat struggles to protect the rich kid Waganma from the mysterious Monster Association who are trying to kidnap him. Rising action, babey!

Except, this post is actually gonna be super short. I've only been able to find a single redraw in the entire volume. Well, here we go!

Chapter 49

After hearing about how strong Garou is, Saitama's ready to be hunted. The panels along the left side and the bottom have all been changed, giving Saitama's declaration a bit more of an awkward tone.

And that's pretty much it, folks. Volume 10 was a solid time and didn't need many alterations, apparently.

Volume 9: Don't Look Down On Heroes!

Now for the introduction of the Blizzard Group, and for the beginning of Garou's Hero Hunt! The narrative in the series really started to solidify into an actual story arc at this point, and it was starting to pretty much abandon the more episodic format of the past. I miss the episodic format tbh, but it's also nice to see One-Punch Man become a more mature series too.

In this one we have a lot of scene redraws, where the pacing of entire scenes is altered. This leads to plenty of images, so get ready.

Chapter 41

Garou threatening the other criminals is a bit different, having been extended a couple pages. It shows more of Heavy Tank Loincloth's defeat and a bigger reaction to Garou's threats. I've left the text in for your reading pleasure.

Chapter 42

Fubuki meeting up with Eyelashes and Mountain Ape is cut slightly differently, but not a whole lot changes dialogue or story-wise with them.

Next on the list is Genos meeting Speed-o'-Sound Sonic again. Last time they met, one of them was naked, and they don't hit it off well this time either. The volume version expands on their banter a little.

Chapter 44

The next couple redraws are set in the midst of battles, which is always fun. First up is Genos using Machine Gun Blows on Sonic, in which you'll notice his face gets a lot more intense:

Then there's Sonic using Ten Shadows Burial against Saitama. I like how in the volume version there are actually ten different Sonics on the page:

Next up is the aftermath of said battles. You'll notice that the joke is actually different between versions: the original has Genos declaring that Sonic is finally dead but Sonic runs away, while the volume version has Genos naively asking Saitama if he killed Sonic as he lays comatose on the pavement. I think I prefer the original's joke tbh, I just love the idea of Genos declaring "ah yes, he's finally dead."
